ANNOUNCEMENT TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS
As the H1N1 pandemic progresses in Hong Kong, both The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Johns Hopkins University have regrettably decided to cancel all joint summer programs in Hong Kong, including the Talented Youth Summer Program 2009 (TYS@UST).
It has been a difficult decision for us. Communications with the HKSAR Government indicated that they are taking a very cautious stance in order to prevent the spreading of H1N1. Measures are particularly stringent in protection of minors under the age of 18. After extensive deliberations, the University cannot rule out the possibilities of program termination as required by the Government once there is a H1N1 incident at the University. Similarly, neither could we avoid medical surveillance, medical checks, daily intake of preventive medication (such as Tamiflu), or quarantine amongst our students as required by the Government when there is an H1N1 case in the program.
With students' safety being our first and foremost priority, it has been conclued that it is not in the best interests of our students to go forward with this year's program. Students who have applied and/or been accepted into the program shall receive a notification via email shortly.
